Compress Audio for Discord

Prepare an audio attachment for a Discord channel, from a short game sound to a recorded discussion. The Discord preset uses 128 kbps MP3; it does not read your subscription, server settings or upload allowance. Short clips may fit comfortably at that bitrate, while a long discussion needs a duration-based size calculation. Download the finished file before attaching it in Discord.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload your local audio recording, not a Discord message URL.
  2. Compare the duration with the size examples and select a suitable bitrate.
  3. Listen for clear voices and game effects, then upload the downloaded MP3 to the channel.

Calculated size examples

Calculated, not measured uploads: bytes ≈ bitrate (kb/s) × seconds × 1,000 ÷ 8. MB here means 1,000,000 bytes. Headers, tags and variable bitrate affect actual size. Channels are already included in the total bitrate; do not multiply again.

Clip length matters more than the platform label

As a calculated estimate, thirty seconds at 128 kbps needs roughly 0.48 decimal MB before headers. Fifteen minutes at the same setting needs thirty times as much. A platform-named preset is a convenience, not an adaptive upload guarantee. For a hard limit, leave room for headers and confirm the final byte count.

Keep the sounds your audience needs

A game bug report may need both dialogue and a quiet sound effect. Test whether low-bitrate compression masks that effect. Stereo can preserve left-right cues important to gameplay feedback; mono is a reasonable choice for a single-microphone meeting recap, not automatically for every clip.

Playback and upload troubleshooting

If Discord rejects the attachment, check the current allowance in that account or channel. If it uploads but sounds quiet, lowering bitrate will not make it louder. Adjust volume separately, avoiding repeated MP3 exports wherever possible. A supported file does not guarantee an embedded player in every client.

Questions about this operation

Does this tool connect to Discord?
No. It processes a file on this site's server. You upload the downloaded copy yourself.
What upload limit should I use?
Use the limit displayed in your current Discord account or channel. The page does not assume one universal allowance.
Why does a long recording still fail?
Duration multiplies size even at moderate bitrate. Select a smaller target or keep only the relevant portion.
Will a smaller MP3 fix distorted voice chat?
No, existing distortion remains. Compression can add more artifacts, so keep enough bitrate for the damaged source.
Can I compress video here?
This tool takes audio inputs. Extract the audio from your video first if the pictures are unnecessary.
