Container names do not reveal quality
AAC inside M4A is already perceptually compressed. Transcoding it to MP3 creates another lossy generation. ALAC starts from losslessly coded samples, but MP3 still discards information during export. Neither case justifies a claim that conversion preserves everything or improves fidelity.
Why the MP3 can be larger
AAC and MP3 do not need equal bitrate for comparable listening results. An M4A around 128 kbps exported to MP3 at 192 kbps can grow by roughly half in audio payload at the same duration. Choose MP3 because the destination needs it, not because every M4A-to-MP3 conversion saves storage.
Voice-memo handoff checklist
Confirm the exported file includes the whole memo, not a sharing link or preview. Listen to the beginning and end after conversion and verify the target app accepts it. Preserve identifying filenames separately: tags can differ between M4A and MP3, and not every artwork or metadata field is guaranteed to survive.
