Settings for this task
| Use case | Setting | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portable music | 192 kbps · stereo | A practical first comparison. |
| Larger listening copy | 320 kbps · stereo | More encoding capacity, still lossy. |
How to use this tool
- Upload one FLAC track and check its duration.
- Choose a bitrate and keep stereo for the original mix.
- Test the MP3 on the intended player and check tags separately.
Calculated size examples
Calculated, not measured uploads: bytes ≈ bitrate (kb/s) × seconds × 1,000 ÷ 8. MB here means 1,000,000 bytes. Headers, tags and variable bitrate affect actual size. Channels are already included in the total bitrate; do not multiply again.
| Output duration | Format | Bitrate | Estimated audio payload |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4:00 | MP3 | 192 kb/s | 5.76 MB |
| 4:00 | MP3 | 320 kb/s | 9.6 MB |
Lossless input, lossy output
FLAC compression can be reversed to recover the samples it stores. MP3 compression cannot recover everything it discards. A successful FLAC-to-MP3 job therefore changes the preservation properties of the file even if you do not hear a difference. The safest archive remains the original FLAC.
Do not predict savings from FLAC size alone
FLAC size depends on musical complexity, bit depth, sample rate and channels. MP3 size at a chosen bitrate mainly follows duration. Two four-minute FLAC tracks can have different original sizes yet similar 192 kbps MP3 outputs. Use duration, not a guessed fixed percentage, to plan storage.
Player compatibility includes metadata
Some older players have requirements beyond an .mp3 extension. Check sample rate and test one file before converting a collection elsewhere. Metadata preservation is requested by default but tags and embedded artwork are not guaranteed to map perfectly. Check artist, album and track ordering after download.
Questions about this operation
- Can this preserve FLAC losslessness?
- Not in MP3 output. Keep FLAC or use a suitable lossless output in the format converter.
- Why does a quiet track have a different saving?
- FLAC's compression depends on the signal. The MP3 duration and bitrate explain its size more directly.
- Will converting MP3 back to FLAC restore detail?
- No. FLAC would preserve the already decoded MP3 signal, including its losses.
- Can I upload an entire album at once?
- This workflow processes one file at a time. It does not create album folders or a batch archive.
- Should I increase the sample rate?
- Not to improve quality. Retain the source rate or choose one required by your destination player.
